Waiter holding a slice of pie topped with whipped cream

These are the best pie shops across Texas

Put these sweet spots on your Texas bucket list.

Pie is hardly an American invention, but how many other countries love it so much they create a holiday around this tasty dessert? Just in time for National Apple Pie Day on May 13, we’re unveiling the most delicious slices of pie within a three-hour drive from Dallas. These make excellent day trips and friend outings because many are located in smaller towns that beg to be explored. So load up your fork and loosen your belts; we’re going on a tour of pie shops across Texas.

Koffee Kup Family Restaurant

300 2nd St., Hico, TX 76457

The Koffee Kup Family Restaurant in Hico is practically a Texas institution, serving up home cooking and some of the best pie in Texas since 1968. From Dallas, it’s about 100 miles southwest, time you can spend dreaming about which of the selections you’ll try. They bake up to 16 types of pie fresh each morning. You might see banana blueberry with a cream cheese filling, fresh cherry in a double crust, or “Doctor’s Office,” a graham cracker crust filled with a rich cream cheese and vanilla custard filling, topped with toasted coconut and pecans. Slices cost $4.99 each and you can make it à la mode for $1.69 extra. Buy a whole pie for $18.99 or a six-piece mixed pie for $19.99. They even have sugar-free options, a rare find.

Joy Pie Shop (at Lucy’s on the Square)

127 N. Ohio St., Celina, TX 75009

About 40 miles north of Dallas is Lucy’s on the Square in Celina, a place with such popular pie, they created their own brand and pie store at the same location: Joy Pie Shop. This may look like fancy pants pie, but it tastes like what grandma would have made if she had come up with a recipe for tres leches pie (three different kinds of milk and sour cream cooked to create a smooth, rich filling poured in a cookie pie crust and topped with whipped cream and cinnamon). The double-crust cherry amaretto shines, too, as does the chocolate cream pie, their best seller of 2023. Slices are $6.99 and a whole pie ranges from $26–$35; gluten-free options are available.

Piefalootin

2441 Goldfinch Ln., Garland, TX 75042

Owner Tracy Dowd capitalized on her home-based pie sales success and opened Piefalootin in Garland, just east of Dallas. Check the board out front for daily selections from her extensive menu. You’ll see a mix of classics like Texas pecan or lemon chess, as well as seasonal delights and creatively named originals, like Espresso My Love (German chocolate espresso cream with coconut, pecans, and chocolate whipped cream) and Cinco de PIE-yo (chocolate cream over spicy brownies with cinnamon and cayenne pepper whipped cream). Pies are $8.50 for a generous slice, $13 for a quarter to share (or not), or $45 for a whole pie (definitely order ahead).  Can’t make up your mind? Try the “pie flight” with your choice of three smaller slices for $18.

Pie Peddlers

102 Walnut St., Glen Rose, TX 76043

About 75 miles southwest of Dallas, prepare to be impressed by crust-to-filling ratios at Pie Peddlers. This lovely shop sits in historic downtown Glen Rose on the square. It’s a perfect location for a walk after you dig into tall slices of pie from their menu of around 20 flavors, including seasonal selections. The juicy strawberry rhubarb pie and coconut meringue pie were standouts for us. Get a slice for $4.50, a mini pie for $6, and make it à la mode for 50¢ extra. A whole pie costs $22–$24.

Whistle Stop Café

904 S Hwy 81-287, Decatur, TX 76234

Located in what appears to be an old hotel about 65 miles northeast of Dallas in Decatur, Whistle Stop Café is a mom-and-pop joint with a homey atmosphere and country-style cooking. If that sounds like a perfect place for pie, you’d be right. Every day is a surprise – our favorite is their cherry pie with a lattice crust top and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Fabulous. Limited hours mean you need to plan ahead for that slice, though: they’re open Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Woman having coffee with her dog on a café patio

Cortie’s Corner: These are the most dog-friendly coffee shops in Phoenix

Get your next caffeine fix with your furry BFF in tow.

Finding places to take your pooch while you grab some caffeine is a cinch in Phoenix, where dog-friendly patios are a mainstay at many coffee shops. Whether you’re after a killer cold brew, a frothy latte, or a bold espresso, these spots have you covered, with the added bonus of a welcoming vibe for your canine pal. So, leash up your pup and sniff out these local coffee shops where you can sit and stay awhile with furry friends.

32 Shea

Phoenix

Residents of north Phoenix’s “Sheaborhood” adore the quirky 32 Shea — housed in a former drive-thru Fotomat — for its coffee drinks made with Flagstaff-based Matador beans and its puppuccino whipped cream cups for their four-legged friends, available on request. It also boasts a dog-friendly grassy area with a mini fire hydrant that dispenses fresh water. All drive-thru customers get a free dog treat, and 32 Shea is beloved among animal lovers for partnering with local rescue groups on adoptions. It also serves food and alcohol and has a popular happy hour.

Bottle & Bean

Chandler

Coffee shop and wine bar Bottle & Bean in south Chandler’s darling “downtown Ocotillo” has a huge patch of real grass where furry friends can relax. This, along with patios on two sides, would make it a great destination even if it didn’t also give gratis puppuccino cups topped with dog treat crumbles. Those with two legs can enjoy specialty espresso and chai drinks along with a concise menu of breakfast and lunch items and various pastries — or a charcuterie and cheese board and glass of vino, if you’re inclined.

Coffee Rush

Chandler and Gilbert

Waterfront seating isn’t the norm in the landlocked Valley of the Sun, but the patio behind the strip center at Coffee Rush’s Chandler location overlooks a lovely community lake, making it a scenic oasis for well-mannered, leashed dogs and their people. Various international beans and blends are the basis for an extensive menu of coffee drinks, and they offer a generous lineup of regular and sugar-free syrups for coffees and Italian sodas. Its Gilbert location on Baseline doesn’t allow dogs, but the Gilbert store at Val Vista and Elliot does, and it’s only 3.5 miles from Cosmo Dog Park.

Echo Coffee

Phoenix and Scottsdale

Since 2021, Echo Coffee has donated one percent of its sales to the Arizona Humane Society, and its original Scottsdale location has a patio with shaded tables and gives out free dog treats. It also sells bags of high-quality beans with the likenesses of Echo founder Rob Rigolfi Jr.’s dogs: Diesel, Chunky, Peggy, and Luna. So it’s no surprise that when AHS opened a new campus at Phoenix’s Papago Park in 2023, Echo was tapped to become its corporate partner and set up an indoor cafe (sorry, no doggos allowed at this outpost because it’s fully indoors).

Hair of the Dog

Gilbert

It’s more of a craft beer and wine bar than a coffee shop, but Hair of the Dog deserves a wag because it lets dogs lounge with their people indoors — an important perk when it hits triple digits. How is this possible? There’s no kitchen. But they host rotating food trucks, they sell packaged snacks for humans and locally made dog treats, and they serve espresso drinks made with beans by another local favorite, The Buzzed Goat, if you want a booze-free outing with your pooch.

Mis Raices

Phoenix

This Latina-owned coffee shop is renowned for its lip-smacking sweet drinks inspired by Mexican dessert flavors such as cajeta, flan, and horchata, and it’s ideally located in the hip, dog-loving Historic Grand Avenue arts district. Mis Raices shares a large, shaded patio with other businesses and gives out pup cups of whipped cream. Smoothies, pastries, and other light bites are on the menu, too. Pro tip: Pop in for a pick-me-up before heading to First Fridays or prior to an evening hang-out because it closes at 4:30 p.m. on weekdays (and 4 on weekends).

Pair Cupworks

Tempe

Although this shop is a kiosk tucked inside the behemoth Bouldering Project gym, non-members are welcome to wander in for an award-winning brew. The roastery is renowned for its quality beans, which it sells wholesale throughout the U.S. and in Europe and Asia. While sipping a latte, customers can enjoy the gigantic, shaded turf courtyard with Adirondack chairs so your Labradoodle can linger while you catch up on your laptop. Lawn games and hammocks are available, too. Pair Cupworks has locations in Mesa and Gilbert as well.

Songbird Coffee & Tea House

Phoenix

Nestled among all of the tall, shiny new apartments and other modern developments in the Roosevelt Row Arts District is Songbird Coffee & Tea House, a cute-as-a-button coffee shop in a charming, historic 1904 home. Their espresso, pour-over, and cold brew java drinks begin with beans from Tempe-based Cortez Coffee Roasters, which you can enjoy with a pastry or breakfast sandwich. Bring your pup and hang out on the inviting, greenery-ensconced patio or big, grassy front yard with picnic tables and Adirondack chairs.
