Where to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Phoenix

10 ways to celebrate, including Lucha Libre wrestling matches, live mariachi music, margarita specials, and more.

Commonly mistaken for Mexican Independence Day (which is celebrated on September 16), Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday marking Mexico’s May 5, 1862 victory over France in the Battle of Puebla. It’s often referred to as Battle of Puebla Day. And get this: it’s a relatively minor holiday in Mexico. Here in the United States, where baile folklorico dancers parade through the streets in brightly-colored traditional dresses, and agave-drenched margaritas flow out of pitchers, the holiday has undoubtedly evolved into one big celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. From festivals to food specials, nobody does Cinco de Mayo quite like Phoenix.

Cinco de Mayo Phoenix Festival

With a run that reaches beyond three decades, the Cinco de Mayo Phoenix Festival is widely regarded as the Valley’s biggest, and best, Cinco de Mayo celebration. The downtown Phoenix fest brings out big crowds who come to see a lineup of baile folklorico dancers, entertainers, food vendors, musicians, artists, and masked luchadores, who meet at the center of the wrestling ring for adrenaline-raising matches. Don’t miss any of the action, or the delicious eats like birria and grilled elotes; secure your tickets online.

Arizona Diamondbacks Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

On May 4, the Arizona Diamondbacks are putting on a pregame Cinco de Mayo Fiesta ahead of their ballpark bout with the San Diego Padres. The party includes drink samples and discounted food specials plus a Gabriel Moreno Gold Glove Bobble and a single-game ticket. Fans ages 20 and younger are not permitted.

Mariachi Sol de Mexico at The Madison Center for the Arts

On Cinco de Mayo, The Madison Center for the Arts is welcoming Mariachi Sol De Mexico, a lively musical ensemble led by Grammy-nominated frontman José Hernández, to its Phoenix venue. The group of performers play to the crowd and encourage everyone to sing along from their seats, which makes the live music show a truly immersive, and memorable, experience.

Cinco de Mayo at Skateland

Mesa’s Skateland is celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a family-friendly fest complete with music from latin artists, face painting, a bounce house, and roller skating, of course. The day-to-night event will also feature specials, including a $5 nacho and drink combo. And, one lucky skater will take home a pinata full of candy if they win Skateland’s Cinco de Mayo prize raffle.

In addition to Pedal Haus’ specialty brews, like the Beach Cruiser Mexican Lager, the award-winning brewery will also be pouring its new Mexican Lime Lager for the occasion. And, check out the drink specials on Pedal Haus’ frosty Micheladas and Haus Margaritas while you work on your salsa moves in the beer garden.

Gilbert’s O.H.S.O. Brewery is going all out – not just for Cinco de Mayo, but for the entire weekend. Make plans to meet at The Park, which is basically a giant adult playground complete with its own arcade and outdoor yard games.
