Speakeasy bar in Phoenix with dim lighting

Phoenix’s top secret hidden hangouts, cocktail bars, and speakeasies

And tips for where to find them.

Tucked away from the city’s hustle, there are a host of hidden hangouts, cocktail bars, and speakeasies throughout Phoenix, offering a taste of the underground scene with a contemporary twist. From secret entrances to killer cocktails, these spots promise an adventure for those in the know. Whether you’re into luxe lounges or swanky subterranean spots, you won’t want to keep these Phoenix speakeasies a secret.

Rough Rider

An elevator (inside the Ten-O-One building on Roosevelt Street) will transport you to Rough Rider. This polished Victorian-inspired lounge has a somewhat rugged ambiance complete with a chortling portrait of Teddy Roosevelt, oversized tufted leather chairs, and handsome wood bookcases stocked with trinkets, bottles, and other artifacts you might find in a hunting cabin. Serving upscale cocktails, and contemporary cuisine to match, Rough Rider ticks both boxes for your next dinner and drinks date. An order of fresh oysters and a couple of mezcal-drenched Daisy Temples will surely get your night going.

The Cave at Quartz

Going to The Cave, hidden inside Quartz, is like stepping into a rose-hued surrealist daydream where the drinks are served in theatrical fashion and the atmosphere oozes with opulence. The cocktail menu features a shortlist of dressed-up drinks inspired by deserts across the globe, from the Gobi to the Sahara. For those who appreciate the finer things, try the tart and tasty Life in Pink. Inspired by the Atacama Desert and the blushy flamingos that inhabit the salt flats of Peru and Chile, this twist on a pisco sour steals the show with notes of grapefruit and a fluffy cloud-like egg white on top.

Bar 1912

If you’re looking for a sign, the bold, all caps, neon text spelling out “cocktails” above a side entry door into the Modern Manor building and Valentine restaurant space is it. Enter Bar 1912, a destination for natural wine, fine cocktails, and a listening studio where records spin simultaneously. Here, you can sip tried-and-true classics, like Dirty Martinis with olives or Old Fashioneds on the rocks. For a more experimental libation, opt for the Cotton, which features an enticing combination of sherry, lemon, egg white, and a pistachio cotton candy garnish.

Stardust Pinbar

This hidden bar is equal parts arcade and 80s dance hall. Arrive at Stardust Pinbar via Ziggy’s Magic Pizza Shop; you’ll pass by some sticker-covered lockers and a kitchen door along your journey. Bring your moves to the illuminated rainbow-colored dance floor or belly-up to one of the bar’s retro pinball machines. When it comes to drinks, take your pick. The Saguaro Slammer is sure to satisfy fans of gin. And if you like your drinks spicy, like really spicy, tempt your taste buds with Stardust’s Desert Bird.

Melinda’s Alley

Melinda’s Alley is an intimate underground bar that’s only open for business when the red light outside is glowing. An unassuming alleyway just outside of the Renaissance Hotel will lead you into the mysterious, dimly-lit drinking den. Melinda’s tunnelish interior is enveloped in a crimson hue that blankets everything inside, from the velvet curtains to the low-hung ceiling. The Old Fashioned is a Melinda’s staple — and can usually be ordered from the bar’s weekly rotating cocktail menu.

Trophy Room at Wren & Wolf

Concealed within Wren & Wolf, Trophy Room offers imbibers an immersive, unplugged sensory experience, fancy cocktails, and an awe-worthy atmosphere. The details about this cocktail-centric concept are mostly hush-hush, but you can secure your seats via reservation to see what it’s like first-hand. Make sure to snap your photos before you enter; phones and cameras are not permitted inside this swanky hideout.

Barcoa Agaveria Basement Bar

In most instances, wandering into dark basement bars would be ill-advised. Luckily, Barcoa Agaveria inside the Xico building passes the vibe check. The downtown basement bar is decorated with Mexican art at every turn, from the trio of ornately beaded cow skulls that hang in the lounge to the murals that cover the walls. Barcoa’s menu is packed with agave spirits sourced from small producers, Mexican wine, and bottled Mexican beer. Get acquainted with all things agave with the Agave Road Trip, a tasting flight featuring three mezcals. For a refreshing tipple, try the Aloe Refresco with blanco tequila, honey and jasmine-infused aloe vera juice, and lemon.

Captain’s Cabin at Hula’s Modern Tiki

Set your sights, or sails, on the Captain’s Cabin, a 1940s Tahitian-style speakeasy that neighbors up to Hula’s Modern Tiki on 7th Street. Inside, and after a few drinks, you might feel like you’re navigating the Pacific Ocean for two reasons: the amount of rum in the place and the nautical decor. Tiki classics like Zombies, Nui Nuis, Painkillers, and Mai Tais reign supreme. Groups who are game should go all-in on a Scorpion Bowl. This boozy vat of tequila, brandy, and citrusy tinctures is made for sharing, after all.

Waiter holding a slice of pie topped with whipped cream

These are the best pie shops across Texas

Put these sweet spots on your Texas bucket list.

Pie is hardly an American invention, but how many other countries love it so much they create a holiday around this tasty dessert? Just in time for National Apple Pie Day on May 13, we’re unveiling the most delicious slices of pie within a three-hour drive from Dallas. These make excellent day trips and friend outings because many are located in smaller towns that beg to be explored. So load up your fork and loosen your belts; we’re going on a tour of pie shops across Texas.

Koffee Kup Family Restaurant

300 2nd St., Hico, TX 76457

The Koffee Kup Family Restaurant in Hico is practically a Texas institution, serving up home cooking and some of the best pie in Texas since 1968. From Dallas, it’s about 100 miles southwest, time you can spend dreaming about which of the selections you’ll try. They bake up to 16 types of pie fresh each morning. You might see banana blueberry with a cream cheese filling, fresh cherry in a double crust, or “Doctor’s Office,” a graham cracker crust filled with a rich cream cheese and vanilla custard filling, topped with toasted coconut and pecans. Slices cost $4.99 each and you can make it à la mode for $1.69 extra. Buy a whole pie for $18.99 or a six-piece mixed pie for $19.99. They even have sugar-free options, a rare find.

Joy Pie Shop (at Lucy’s on the Square)

127 N. Ohio St., Celina, TX 75009

About 40 miles north of Dallas is Lucy’s on the Square in Celina, a place with such popular pie, they created their own brand and pie store at the same location: Joy Pie Shop. This may look like fancy pants pie, but it tastes like what grandma would have made if she had come up with a recipe for tres leches pie (three different kinds of milk and sour cream cooked to create a smooth, rich filling poured in a cookie pie crust and topped with whipped cream and cinnamon). The double-crust cherry amaretto shines, too, as does the chocolate cream pie, their best seller of 2023. Slices are $6.99 and a whole pie ranges from $26–$35; gluten-free options are available.

Piefalootin

2441 Goldfinch Ln., Garland, TX 75042

Owner Tracy Dowd capitalized on her home-based pie sales success and opened Piefalootin in Garland, just east of Dallas. Check the board out front for daily selections from her extensive menu. You’ll see a mix of classics like Texas pecan or lemon chess, as well as seasonal delights and creatively named originals, like Espresso My Love (German chocolate espresso cream with coconut, pecans, and chocolate whipped cream) and Cinco de PIE-yo (chocolate cream over spicy brownies with cinnamon and cayenne pepper whipped cream). Pies are $8.50 for a generous slice, $13 for a quarter to share (or not), or $45 for a whole pie (definitely order ahead).  Can’t make up your mind? Try the “pie flight” with your choice of three smaller slices for $18.

Pie Peddlers

102 Walnut St., Glen Rose, TX 76043

About 75 miles southwest of Dallas, prepare to be impressed by crust-to-filling ratios at Pie Peddlers. This lovely shop sits in historic downtown Glen Rose on the square. It’s a perfect location for a walk after you dig into tall slices of pie from their menu of around 20 flavors, including seasonal selections. The juicy strawberry rhubarb pie and coconut meringue pie were standouts for us. Get a slice for $4.50, a mini pie for $6, and make it à la mode for 50¢ extra. A whole pie costs $22–$24.

Whistle Stop Café

904 S Hwy 81-287, Decatur, TX 76234

Located in what appears to be an old hotel about 65 miles northeast of Dallas in Decatur, Whistle Stop Café is a mom-and-pop joint with a homey atmosphere and country-style cooking. If that sounds like a perfect place for pie, you’d be right. Every day is a surprise – our favorite is their cherry pie with a lattice crust top and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Fabulous. Limited hours mean you need to plan ahead for that slice, though: they’re open Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
